Hello, boyos (and girlies)!
Last week and this week mark the beginning of my self-publishing journey… for better or worse. As promised, I will share my thoughts and experiences along the way. Here’s where we’re at:
My “right hand man” (for lack of a better title), Michael Boucher, completed a batch of rough drafts for the video trailer for Eden. Once we have all the artwork in place, we will post it to YouTube and link it here for all to see.
I suppose, if I can maybe somehow hopefully someday make a living out of this, I’ll have to give him a corner office.
This bit of news is related to the video trailer. Miceli Productions will be transforming a friend of mine into one of the main characters from Eden. The photo shoot is tomorrow (Monday), and I’m very excited to see the results – it’s going to be quite the transformation!
In a bizarre coincidence, my model will be wearing a dress which was worn for the same character in a play directed by another friend of mine ~6 years ago. My wife was the actress, the character’s name is the same, but I’ve interpreted the character’s historical and mythological significance with a fresh lens…
Your first glimpse of this character will be in the video trailer.
Well, the first artist I found has agreed to create the cover art and lend some of his previous creations to my marketing efforts. Axel Torvenius is a fantastic talent. I reviewed over 50 artist galleries, and most of them were quite good. Axel’s stuff just has so much edge and mood… I can’t explain it. His style is a perfect fit for Eden, and I’m quite glad he agreed to do the cover art. I know I’ve purchased books based on the cover alone (artwork + title), so I’m not underestimating the value great cover art brings.
Very early in the editing process, I discovered a fantastic core of awesome people who not only spot my mistakes/bad habits with unerring accuracy — but, they are also not afraid to tell me when I’m being lame/stupid/lame.
My wife is my faceman (facewoman?) – she saves the rest of the team from so much “matt-garbage”, I can’t even tell ya. She is the first filter, saving me face with the rest of the A-Team and beyond. The rest of the team is comprised of my Right-Hand Man (RHM from now on), my editor, and the wife of one of my longtime friends.
What the hell am I getting at? Well, they are reviewing the finalists for my “book blurb” (that paragraph on the back of the book… the most important paragraph!). I hope to make a decision on it this week and post that here so y’all can get a better idea of what Eden’s all about.

Check out the links to the right – it’s there and I hope to use it (and other social media tools) to close the gap between my books and my potential audiences. I’m still not exactly sure what I’ll post here and what I’ll track there… but, for now, all major news will be posted here.
In other news…
This week will be the “make or break” for the short story competition I’m hoping to enter. I’ll be in Des Moines, but hopefully I find the drive and words to finish it. I’m really intrigued by the science behind my submission, so I do hope to finish it.
