Your post is an important lesson for all Indies, to be careful what they wish for. The promise of a level playing field is what first attracted me to Indie Publishing, and I completely agree with your statements suggesting Indies learn how to think like business people, not artists. It is an incredibly difficult row to hoe, however, and the learning is never complete. Often, you'll have to adjust something in your marketing before you've even completed the first step! But then, if we'd wanted riches and glory, we would have chosen politics...

Meanwhile, my wife complains with every page she reads, from a highly touted, million selling novel from one of the big six, how terrible the writing is. For any Indie to submit one of their novels to a serious, recognized review venue (think: NY Times Book Review, for example...) they will need either a celebrity connection, their own notoriety, or very deep pockets and the publicist that comes with it. How do we circumvent the industry spawned belief that self-pubbed books are rubbish?
